Course Description

The American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR course provides healthcare providers and public safety professionals the knowledge and skills necessary to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adult, child, and infant patients. Using lecture, skills demonstration, practice and case-based emergency response scenarios, this program builds the key skills that are needed to drive better patient outcomes. Upon successful completion of the course, learners will receive a 2-year Basic Life Support certificate.

Course Outline

  1. Rapid Assessment and Visual Survey
  2. Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Critical concepts of high-quality CPR 
  3. Differences between adult, child and infant rescue techniques 
  4. Rescue breathing for adult, child and infant
  5. Obstructed airways: Relief of choking for adult, child, and infant
  6. Opioid Overdoses
  7. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Communication and Teamwork
  8. The Emergency Medical Services System
  9. Legal Considerations
  10. Precautions

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be familiar with

  • How to recognize life-threatening emergencies
  • How to perform high-quality CPR individually and as part of a team
  • Use of an automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • Foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) techniques
