Course Description

Basic course for English language learners with low intermediate – high intermediate proficiency. The class will offer students basic education and English language skill building, will help students to become functionally competent in the four language skill areas (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and will enhance the growth of students’ abilities in the areas of job preparation, citizenship, cultural integration, life skills, and active participation in society. This course is offered at partner locations.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course:

  • Students will be able to describe people, write about routines, interpret an ID card, and complete an application.
  • Students will be able to talk about free-time activities, communicate likes and dislikes, and understand a schedule of events.
  • Students will be able to describe household problems, get directions, and interpret rent and utility bills.
  • Students will be able to communicate health problems, make a doctor’s appointment, and interpret medicine labels.
  • Students will be able to describe job responsibilities, ask about work policies, and interpret a paystub.
  • Students will master foundational English grammar, including simple present tense, compound sentences, present tense yes/no and information questions, adverbs of frequency, infinitive verbs, simple past tense regular and irregular, simple past information questions, prepositions of time, because/for, expressions of necessity and prohibition, WH- information questions, and can/could.
  • Students will be able to comprehend text about familiar topics.
  • Students will be able to participate in conversations about familiar topics.
