Course Description

Evidence Based Reading Strategies (AEPP Workshop) will focus on evidence-based instructional strategies for teaching reading to beginning, intermediate, and advanced-level adult learners. You will learn how to assess learners in the four components of reading and plan evidence-based lessons and activities that are aligned to the College and Career Readiness Standards and address specific learner needs. You will also learn how to monitor student progress through formative assessment. For the final assignment, you will create an action plan for implementing the skills learned in the workshop into your regular teaching practice. Individual coaching will be integrated throughout the course.

Learner Outcomes

After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Define the four essential components of reading and explain the importance of each to proficiency in reading.
  • Identify diagnostic assessment tasks for each of the four essential components and use results to select materials and inform instruction.
  • Select level-appropriate, standards-aligned strategies and activities for teaching the essential components of reading to adult learners.
  • Monitor student progress toward reading goals through formative assessments specific to each reading component.
  • Create an action plan for implementing evidence-based reading strategies in the classroom.
  • Meet with a coach to discuss the action plan and support needed for further implementation of evidence-based reading strategies.
