Course Description

Basic course for English language learners with low beginner – high beginner proficiency. The class will offer students basic education and English language skill building, will help students to become functionally competent in the four language skill areas (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and will enhance the growth of students’ abilities in the areas of job preparation, citizenship, cultural integration, life skills, and active participation in society. This course is offered at partner locations.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course:

  • Students will be able to make introductions, complete personal information forms, interpret a map, and write about themselves.
  • Students will be able to identify common jobs and job locations, share contact information, and describe where they live and work.
  • Students will be able to categorize and describe family members, identify and write dates using American conventions, and ages.
  • Students will be able to describe clothes and colors, compare wants and needs, interpret a receipt, and make a return.
  • Students will be able to describe weather, discuss current events, plan for emergencies, and understand a weather report.
  • Students will be able to identify places in the community, give directions, use public transportation, and discuss future plans.
  • Students will master foundational English grammar, including personal pronouns, simple present tense, singular/plural nouns, yes/no questions, present continuous tense, possessive adjectives and nouns, adverbs of degree, and prepositions of place.
  • Students will be able to comprehend basic paragraphs about familiar topics.
  • Students will be able to participate in conversations about familiar topics.
